Templeton Rye Legend

Straight from the still

Greetings from Templeton!

Our beautiful summer is over in Templeton and the harvest is in full swing. The distillery is busy as usual, and we've had lots of visitors during our last few open tour days.

Many of you have been asking about our increased allocation during the holidays so I wanted to take a minute to explain this to you. As you may know, our product spends at least four years aging in the barrel. We can't go back in time and make more so we "have what we have" until some of our scaled-up production becomes available late next year. We've chosen to allocate the product we have until then, and we send product to Iowa and Illinois at the beginning of every month. In Iowa, we have basically sent 400 cases per month to the State from Jan-Sep of 2009. We backloaded our allocation around the holidays and sent 1,200 cases to the State for October last week, and we're following that up with another 1,200 cases in November and 600 cases in December. The good news is that it should be a little bit easier to find a bottle of The Good Stuff for the next few months. We will return to a lower allocation in January but are quickly approaching November of 2010, the date when our scaled-up production starts to come on line. We sincerely appreciate your patience as we move toward that milestone date.

We were pleased to welcome the Iowa Liquor Commission to Templeton on Sept 9th and our friends from Wirtz Beverage on Sept 11th. (See the pictures and video below.) Please come visit us sometime. Our upcoming tour dates can be found here.

Finally, I wanted to recognize and congratulate two of our peers and fellow pioneers in the craft distillery movement, North Shore Distillery in Chicago and High West Distillery in Park City, Utah. North Shore recently celebrated their 5th anniversary and High West has refurbished the old Beggs & Buckley Livery in Park City to create the world's only ski-in distillery. I met Sonja and Derek from North Shore and David from High West way back at the 1st American Distilling Institute conference in Kentucky and I know we have all enjoyed watching one another progress over the years. Great job friends, and keep up the good work.

All the best from your friends at Templeton Rye,

Scott Bush, President

P.S.: The Templeton Rye family has welcomed a new addition since our last newsletter. Jessica and I are pleased to introduce our daughter, Mary Helen Bush, born on Aug 18th.

Templeton Rye archive project

We started the Templeton Rye archive project as a way to capture all of the great TR stories from the past and preserve them forever. Over the past year we've been added dozens of videos to the project on our YouTube channel, which you can view here. If you have any Templeton Rye stories, pictures or artifacts of your own, please reach out to us - we'd love to share them with all the other TR fans out there!

Iowa Liquor Commission visits Templeton

On Sept 9th we welcomed the Iowa Liquor Commission to the distillery for the second of four Native Distillery Forums. It was a great meeting and we appreciate everyone's time and interest in developing the craft distilling industry in Iowa.

Our primary goal is to have the ability to sell product at the distillery while continuing to operate in the three-tiered distribution system in Iowa. This will create a wonderful new industry in our state and will continue to develop Iowa as the leading agritourism state in the US.

Thank you all for the visit and we look forward to seeing you at Cedar Ridge on Oct 22nd.

Templeton Rye stories: Iowans helping Iowans

Jeremy Freerks of Iowa City sent us this great story and we wanted to share it with the rest of you:

Hey guys, hope business is good. I got a little Templeton Story for you. Last year when the tornadoes hit Parkesburg, Iowa, a number of my family's homes were totally destroyed. My family got together and we helped all our relatives dig out from this mess so they could rebuild again. At the family reunion this year, one of my cousins (who lost his brand new house) showed up with a couple of cases of Templeton Rye for those who gave up their weekend to pitch in. I told my cousin that his thanks were all I needed and not to mention again. Glad he didn't listen. This is all about Iowans helping Iowans and enjoying Iowa's "good stuff."

Tomintoul Distillery Tour

Tomintoul Distillery

Planet Whiskies had a fantastic trip up to the Speyside Whisky region of Scotland in February 2024 to visit Angus Dundee Distillers Tomintoul Distillery within the Cairngorms National Park. Then, after the distillery tour and tasting, which was hosted by Iain Forteath, the master blender of Tomintoul, our press group travelled and stayed the night at the recently bought country home of Tomintoul House in the Aultmore Estate (previously called Aultmore House). Planet Whiskies has made the Tomintoul Distillery, Distillery of the Month for both March/April 2024.
