Limited edition single malt links craftsmanship with one of St Andrews’ most storied spots

A NEW single cask whisky inspired by one of golf’s most famous post-round destinations is set to capture the attention of collectors and connoisseurs alike.

‘The Dunvegan’ is the second release in a golf-inspired series that has already captured significant attention, bringing together whisky-making expertise and the heritage of St Andrews in a limited edition bottling priced at £120 and bottled at 46% ABV.

Building on the momentum of last year’s inaugural release of ‘Caddies’ Dream’, which sold out in record time, the latest expression from Kingsbarns Distillery reinforces the growing demand for distinctive, story-led single malts rooted in place and provenance.

Developed by Wemyss Family Spirits, the family-owned business behind Kingsbarns Distillery, the release marks a rare collaboration with the Dunvegan Hotel, St Andrews, which has welcomed stars such as Clint Eastwood and Bill Murray, Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer, and has long been regarded as a central fixture in golfing culture.

Peter Holroyd, Distillery Manager at Kingsbarns Distillery, said: “This release captures something genuinely special, the moment at the end of a round when stories are shared and memories are made.

“There is a natural connection between whisky and golf, both rooted in patience, craft and tradition. By working with a venue so closely tied to the game, we have created a dram that reflects that shared heritage in an authentic way.

“This is not just about flavour, it is about place, history and the experience that surrounds both the whisky and the game.”

Often described as the ‘19th hole’ of St Andrews, The Dunvegan Hotel has welcomed generations of golfers, from amateurs to major champions, serving as a gathering point after rounds of golf.

That legacy forms the backbone of the collaboration, bringing together two institutions closely linked to the identity and global reputation of St Andrews, the home of golf.

Lucy Fotheringham of the Dunvegan Hotel, said: “We have welcomed golfers from around the world and some of the most famous faces in the world like Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods through our doors, all looking to reflect on their round and share a dram in a place that understands the game.

“This collaboration encapsulates that experience in the glass. There is a genuine connection between Kingsbarns Distillery and the Dunvegan Hotel, both shaped by St Andrews and its global reputation in golf. To see that shared story captured in a single cask whisky is something that will resonate strongly with those who value both tradition and authenticity.”

The whisky itself is drawn from a single Sherry Butt, offering notes of treacle cake, toffee and baked apricot tart, complemented by a touch of candied orange zest.

The palate brings a balance of sweet and sharp, with flavours of pineapple sweets and pickled ginger creating a vibrant and layered profile. A warm finish of pastry and baking spices rounds off the dram, reflecting the distillery’s signature fruity and elegant house style.

Steve Johnston of the PGA and renowned Scottish golf influencer, said: “The Kingsbarns distillery was born from a caddy’s insight, bringing the craft of malt whisky to the home of golf. This iconic partnership celebrates one of the game’s most storied traditions, with a single cask release that captures both rarity and a true sense of place.

“It’s a whisky shaped by its surroundings, designed to be savoured and shared after a round, in the company of those who appreciate the game and its rituals.”

The release is only available in the UK and can be purchased on the Kingsbarns Distillery website and at the Visitor Centre, making it a premium addition to any whisky collection or a memorable gift for those with a love of golf. With just 750 bottles available, it is expected to attract strong interest from whisky enthusiasts and visitors looking to take a piece of St Andrews home with them.
