- 12 Year Old Cask Strength offers whisky lovers the chance to experience Bunnahabhain whisky in its purest form.
Bunnahabhain, Islay’s most northerly distillery since 1881, has revealed its annual small-batch Cask Strength release: Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength 2025 Edition.
Matured on the rugged north-eastern coastline of Islay and crafted using spring water from the Margadale river, this much anticipated whisky delivers a pure expression of Bunnahabhain’s celebrated unpeated, sherried house style.
Building on the success of the previous three editions, this year’s release pays tribute to those who journey to Bunnahabhain’s remote shoreline to taste whisky straight from the cask. But for those unable to make the pilgrimage to Islay, the 12 Year Old Cask Strength offers the rare chance to enjoy that same unfiltered experience, wherever they are in the world.
Matured in Bunnahabhain’s coastal warehouses, the 2025 edition is bottled at 56.4% ABV and draws on predominantly second-fill Oloroso casks, with a measured touch of first fill and refill for depth without distraction. These casks, hand-selected by Master Blender Julieann Fernandez, offers real diversity from the previous 12 Year Old Cask Strength releases by favouring layered complexity over intensity. In contrast to its predecessors, the 2025 edition is more structured, less overtly sweet, and notably more coastal than the previous releases with more of a balanced sherry influence. Where earlier editions showcased a darker fruit and deep spice, the 2025 edition is overall a lighter single malt.
On the release, Master Blender Julieann Fernandez said: “After a hiatus in 2024, Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength is back by popular demand. This whisky is everything that the distillery is known for: unpeated, sherried, and full of intense flavour.
One of the greatest joys for me as a Master Blender is tasting a whisky in its purest form directly from cask and it brings me real pleasure to be able to share that experience with our community of whisky lovers. Not every whisky stands up to Cask Strength, but Bunnahabhain is absolutely made for it. This release differs from the previous three; I chose predominantly second-fill Oloroso sherry casks, balanced with first fill and refill, to reveal a nuanced, distillate-led profile. Expect layers of coastal malt, gentle spice, and subtle sherry influence, with flavours of malty sweetness, dried apricot, and hazelnut, leading to a long finish of oak spice and maritime freshness.”
Priced at £90, Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength is non-chill filtered with no added colour, allowing whisky lovers to enjoy as nature intended. It is available globally at www.bunnahabhain.com and selected specialist retailers from 1st September 2025.
