Flybe Announce Up To 25 Per Cent More Seats Between Glasgow And Islay This Summer

Flybe franchise partner, Loganair has announced a 25 per cent increase in the number of seats of between Glasgow and Islay, over the peak summer period. 

The airline will be operating an extra rotation between the mainland and the Inner Hebrides' southernmost island on Monday, Friday and Sunday on select dates between May and September. 

This brings the total number of rotations up to three on Mondays and Fridays and two on Sundays.

The boost to the island comes off the back in its popularity amongst tourists during the summer season, especially avid whisky and food fans. 

Speaking about the increase in seats, Phil Preston, Loganair's chief operating Phil Preston, said: "The Islay route is extremely popular, particularly with passengers travelling to experience the island's diverse and enticing selection of food and drink. 

"Islay has always been a fantastic destination for a short break and these weekend flights should be attractive to people taking the quick hop from the mainland to the Inner Hebrides. 

"As with the rest of our network, we always monitor trends and aspire to meet the demand on each route." 

The increase in seats is also supported by Islay airport's operator, HIAL. 

Duncan MacGillivray, Islay Airport Station Manager, said: "This is a welcome boost for the island's tourist industry and will allow for more weekend breaks on the island this summer. Islay Airport has enjoyed strong growth in the first few months of the year and this additional capacity should see the airport welcome many more visitors to the island over the summer months." 

Tourism is one of Islay's biggest revenue generators. The island has a thriving whisky industry and attracts connoisseurs from all over the world. 

Malcolm Roughead, VisitScotland Chief Executive said: “It is fantastic to hear that Flybe is increasing capacity on its flights to Islay this summer. From catching a glimpse of a golden eagle to delving deep in the island’s rich history there are many amazing things to discover on this stunning island. This good news is also bound to whet the appetite of whisky-lovers keen to pay a visit to one of Islay’s renowned distilleries during the Year of Food and Drink.
