Laphroaig Unveils 38-Year-Old Single Malt: The Second Edition From The Archive Collection
Published Date: 17th June 2025
This aged Laphroaig is amongst some of the rarest spirit from this pivotal decade and marks a bold step back in time
Islay, June 2025: Laphroaig announces the release of the second edition in its Archive Collection 38-Year-Old. Created during a decade of change at the distillery, this whisky was shaped by this historical moment in time making for a real enduring rarity.
During the 1980s Laphroaig distillery faced a time of change, and at times uncertainty. This decade saw production slow down ahead of extensive renovations. But in typical Laphroaig style, the distillery weathered the challenges and continued with determination.
The building of a new stillhouse was no easy task. A new structure was required to be built over both the existing stills and condensers, bringing them inside the still room for the first time. As such this 38-Year-Old is amongst the rarest whisky crafted in the same spirit of old-style Laphroaig from the distillery’s early years.
Each release in the Archive Collection is a celebration of Laphroaig's history and the skilled pioneers behind its story. The 38-year-old whisky embodies this in every drop, taking whisky lovers on a journey through time. An unforgettable decade navigated by the dedicated whisky makers who have watched over the spirit since it was distilled in 1985.
Matured in American ex-bourbon casks followed by a finish in a second-fill oloroso sherry hogshead, this single malt completed its detailed journey in an oloroso sherry-seasoned European oak butt. Bottled at a cask strength of 41.3% ABV, it offers a well-balanced, smooth, and complex profile. Distinctive notes of crystallised ginger, cloves, and a touch of aniseed, come together with Laphroaig’s signature peat, delivering a peppery spark on the palate.
Calling on inspiration from our island home, Archive Collection 38-Year-Old is presented in a hand-blown glass bottle with a textured neck inspired by sea glass found on the beaches of Laphroaig’s island home of Islay.
Daryl Haldane, Private Client Director, commented “The Archive Collection offers a unique opportunity for whisky lovers to immerse themselves in a significant moment in Laphroaig’s history. The 1980s was a pivotal time for the distillery but the focus never wavered. For me, I think it’s both exciting and intriguing that this spirit from the early reveals a rich story from the past. It is a step back in time, a genuine throwback to times gone by. The rarity of this 38-year-old single malt stands as a true testament to the conviction and dedication that has always defined Laphroaig.”
Calum Fraser, Master Blender, added, “The 38-year-old Laphroaig boldly tells a story of the past, providing drinkers with the chance to experience the unmatched skill and spirit of Laphroaig – an experience you won’t forget. This single malt continues the legacy of our highly aged expressions, combining a broad spectrum of flavours and aromas. It brings something new to our classic house style, showcasing the depth and complexity that comes with decades of maturation. This release is a true celebration of our heritage and expertise, captured in every bottle." Only 400 bottles of Laphroaig Archive Collection 38-year-old single malt are available globally for an RRP of £4,100 /$4,300 / €4,760. Friends of Laphroaig have already had the first opportunity to buy this special whisky via an exclusive ballot. From 12th June it will be available from the Laphroaig Visitor Centre and select specialist retailers, including Master of Malt and The Whisky Exchange.
Tasting Notes for Laphroaig 38 Year Old Single Malt
Bottled at 41.3% ABV
Colour: Auburn
Nose: Beautifully spicy with a mixture of dried fruits, raisins and dates, with caramelised orange peel and cherry blossom undertones and a faint whiff of fresh tobacco. Adding water reveals heightened spiced orange notes and a gentle smouldering campfire.
Taste: Smooth and complex, initially with dried apricots and sultanas with a salted caramel creaminess. A spiciness remains – like crystallised ginger, cloves and a touch of aniseed. The peat gives a peppery sensation in the mouth along with an oily texture (smoked mackerel), which is well balanced by the sweetness.
