Wemyss Malts and Blends: Wemyss Malts Release Single Cask
Published Date: 17th February 2012
Wemyss Malts is delighted to announce the release of their latest single cask malt whiskies. Each cask is a celebration of the unique and contrasting appeals of the different Scotch whisky regions. Wemyss whiskies are each identified by their natural taste and aroma and this latest range of four hogsheads comprises:
“Smokehouse” – a 15 years old from Caol Ila Distillery, Islay
“The Malt Barn” – a 14 years old from Bunnahabhain distillery, Islay
“Rum’n’Raisin” – a 22 years old from Tullibardine distillery, Highland
“Winter Spice” – a cask strength 29 years old from Teaninich distillery, Highland
Each cask has been selected by the Wemyss tasting panel, under the watchful eye of industry aficionado Charlie Maclean. The recommended retail prices range from £55 to £110 and these casks will be available in selected retailers in the UK, EU and key Asian markets.
Susan Colville, Regional Sales Manager for Wemyss Malts, commented: “I’m looking forward to selling this latest bottling. It’s the first time we’ve bottled casks from Tullibardine and Teaninich distilleries. As with our most recent bottling, this release has the name of the distillery on the front labels, as well as our regular helpful bottling names based on the aromas and tastes found in each whisky.”
Tasting Notes
SINGLE CASK SINGLE MALT - Rum ‘n’ Raisin
| Name: | Rum ‘n’ Raisin | Tasting Notes and Observations - This Tullibardine is a rich, brushed gold in colour, hinting at a bourbon cask maturation? The initial nose is rich, heady and moreish with aromas of brandy snaps, marzipan and rich dark chocolate before revealing luscious notes of rum-soaked-raisins and macerated cherries. A very attractive nose runs even sweeter with the addition of water, and the palate replicates the nose before hinting at butterscotch and crystallised fruits! |

SINGLE CASK SINGLE MALT - Smokehouse
| Name: | Smokehouse | Tasting Notes and Observations - Pale gold in colour, this Caol Ila is immediately phenolic and ashy, before becoming very medicinal and unusually smoky! Warming reveals more typical Caol Ila notes; creamy, lactic notes coupled with smoked kippers and bacon! The palate replicates the nose, with late tar and treacle before leaving a trail of earthy smoke on the finish. Water softens the intensity; becoming soft and sweetly smoked. |

SINGLE CASK SINGLE MALT - Winter Spice
| Name: | Winter Spice | Tasting Notes and Observations - Pale gold in colour, this Teaninich is immediately spicy on the nose; bursting with aromas of cinnamon, ginger and cloves, before revealing notes of sweet candied fruits and Demerara sugar. The palate is fresh and vibrant, which belies its age. A grassy, herbal note fades to reveal mint, sweet spice and cloved oranges. The addition of water increases the spiciness; becoming soft and round with a lingering finish. |
