Joint Media Release from Scottish Rugby and The Famous Grouse

Spirited showing by Scottish Rugby’s longest serving sponsor

Joint Media Release from Scottish Rugby and The Famous GrouseThe Famous Grouse, Scottish Rugby’s longest-standing sponsor, has announced today that it is extending its partnership.

Scotland’s favourite whisky, is committing to the sport in Scotland for a further two years as official spirit of Scottish Rugby in a six figure deal.

This means that the whisky – created by Perthshire grocer Matthew Gloag in 1896 and recently voted Best Scottish Brand over the last 50 years by the Marketing Society Scotland – will have reached a landmark 21 years of support, making it one of the longest sponsorships in the history of international sport.

Gordon McKie, Scottish Rugby’s Chief Executive, declared: “Scottish Rugby has enjoyed the support of The Famous Grouse for the past two decades and, particularly in these challenging economic times, it speaks volumes for the strength of our partnership that they have decided to once again renew that support.

“Scottish Rugby is proud to have The Famous Grouse, an iconic Scottish brand as our official spirit and continuing to give a whole new meaning to fly-half!”

Gerry O'Donnell, Director of The Famous Grouse, said: “The Famous Grouse has been with Scottish Rugby since 1990, when we first sponsored the Scotland team on their tour of New Zealand hard on the heels of their Grand Slam.

“Our sponsorship of the national team through until 2007 earned The Famous Grouse the title of the longest-running national team sponsorship in the world of rugby.

“We said at the time that we remained a firm supporter of Scottish Rugby and the demonstration of that comes today as we renew our agreement as official spirit of Scottish Rugby.”
